There is no rule that be a Grab or Uber driver, you must talk to your passengers. However, you will have to pick up more than 10 different strangers daily from different backgrounds, personalities and temper etc. Therefore, it is quite important on mastering the skills on how to talk to passengers politely, gentlemanly.

2) Can you hold your temper?

Your passengers might be from different working backgrounds, family backgrounds, races, nationalities and so on. Do you manage to deal with all these people when facing contradictions and conflicts? There are many different situations that may raise your anger. Below are the real cases that current or ex Grab drivers faced before,
  • Passenger eats in the car
  • Passenger smokes in the car
  • Passenger damages your car
  • Passenger brings rubbish into car
  • Passenger sets the wrong pick up location and hence blaming your lateness
  • Passenger requests to stop at another location before going to their final drop off location
  • Passenger is not ready when you arrive, you need to wait for longer time and waste the time and chance to get another trip
  • Passenger keep quiet along the trip, when you asking them the exact pick up/drop off location, they just replied "hmm, ahh, uhh, yaa ...."

5 things you should know when booking a GrabCar

1) Only book the GrabCar when you are ready

  • Always book the GrabCar when you are ready. Don't let the driver to wait for you as their time is money. The fastest to pick you up and drop you off, then only they can accept the following trips and make money from the following trips.
  • If you let the driver to wait more than 5 minutes, this will make them to lose the time and chance to accept another trip from another passenger.
  • For example, a 5km distance trip, you only pay for about RM8, after deduction the Grab company 20% charge, fuel (including the distance to pick you up and send you to destination), car maintenance fee, tyres etc, how much only can they earn from your RM8?

2) Don't ask/ request to stop in the middle of the trip

  • Please bear in mind that the fare for GrabCar is fixed price. It is calculated based on the distance only, it is calculated from pick up location to drop off location.
  • Stop during the trip is strictly not allowed, and the driver reserves the right to report it to the Grab office and you will then be blacklisted and might get banned to use the Grab in the future.
  • If you plan to stop in the middle of the trip from the beginning, please book the trip separately, which means book the trip from location A to location B first, then only book from location B to location C.
  • No matter what reasons that you want to stop in the middle of the trip, either buying a nasi lemak, fetching a friend or withdrawing money from ATM, all these will cause the driver to waste more of their time, fuel and chance to get another trip.
  • The thing is, how much do you pay only for the trip? Are you paying more than the fare of taxi? If not, please be a considerate passenger. :)

3) Double check on the booking details before booking

  • Check that your pick up & drop off location are correct.
  • Always put in the notes to driver. Such as your house number, apartment block number, exact place to pick you up, your contact number etc. By doing this, the driver don't have to contact you at all, they just have to follow your given notes and pick you up correctly. This will speed up the time to pick you up indeed.
  • Type in promo code if any.
  • Choose your payment methods, by cash or credit card.

4) Always be alert and responsive

  • Try not to call the driver directly, kindly use the built in message function in the Grab app to contact the driver. It is dangerous to call the driver as the driver is always driving on the road, they will be distracted by your phone call somehow.
  • Always be responsive whenever driver try to call you or message you. This will save the time and hassle to pick you up in time and smoothly.
  • As you can always check the driver location and arriving time in the app, just prepare and ready yourself when the driver is arriving.

5) Be friendly all the time

  • Treat your GrabCar driver as your friend. Try not to keep quiet along the trip.
  • The GrabCar drivers are all from different backgrounds, professions etc. Some are lecturers, some are engineers, some are managers, some are bankers etc, so?
  • Try chatting with them and you can know more friends and expanding your social networks.

As a conclusion, it is important to be a considerate GrabCar passenger. All just start from you.

How to use Grab?

In order to book a ride by using Grab, all you need to have are a smartphone and a working internet (either using wifi or data).

* Download the Grab application from Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
* Sign up a Grab account. There are 3 options available, which are
  a) Log in with Google,
  b) Log in with Facebook,
  c) Log in with Mobile Number (Recommended).

1) Choose Your Pick Up Location

* Click on PICKUP, it will swap to another page as below. As you can see there are 6 buttons to click on, PERSONAL, FAVORITE, TRANSPORT, SHOPPING, RESTAURANT, PIN (Top right corner).
* Normally we select PERSONAL and type in our location such as KLCC, and it will show all the possible locations for you to choose from.
* Another recommended way is to use the PIN function, as you can pin the location if you know your actual location from the map.

2) Choose Your Drop-off Location

* Click on DROP-OFF, and it will swap to another page same as previously. Then type in your drop-off location, the final view will be shown as below, as you can see your pick up (blue arrow) and drop off (green arrow) location in the map.
* The cars shown in the map are the cars that are available in that area at that moment. And the fare will be displayed after you have set your drop off location.

3) Notes to Driver

* It is always recommended to add in additional information to driver in the Notes to Driver column. Such as “pick me up in front of KFC” or "My house number is 18" etc.
* This will definitely let the driver know where to pick you up correctly. This will save the time and all the hassles like calling you again to confirm the exact location or driver might be going to the wrong place to pick you up.
* Therefore, please keep in mind, always put the notes to driver where exactly you are, like house number, block number, shop name etc.

4) Selecting Your Preferred Type of Car

* As shown as below, you can toggle between each type of car, and the fare will show immediately. Obviously GrabCar has the cheapest fare in town compare to other car types.

5) Inserting Promo Code & Selecting Payment Methods

* After selecting your car type, there are 2 last things to take note of.
* 1st thing is to check if Grab has offered any promotion at that day or not, as you can use the promo code to get discount for your trip at that day and you can save your money by the way.
* 2nd thing is to select your payment method (cash or credit card). It is always recommended to use credit card as your payment method as you can just alight and walk away after arriving at the destination without waiting driver to change the money for you and horn by other impatient drivers on the road while your driver stopping the car beside the road.

6) Booking & Viewing Driver Profile

* Click on green button to “BOOK” once you have confirmed everything is correct. Grab will then search for driver, and if a driver is found successfully for you, you will be able to see the driver name, photo, rating, car plate number, car model and your estimated waiting time
* Try to use the message function in the grab app to contact the driver, try not to call the driver as they are driving and it is dangerous to pick up your phone call.

7) Confirm on Driver Arrival

* Once the driver is arrived, double check again their car plate number, car model and the driver photo if all match up exactly. DON'T ENTER the car if any of the above do not match.

8) Rate The Driver

* Enter the car once you confirm that he is your driver.
* Enjoy the trip and start conversation with driver and treat them as your friend.
* A 5 stars rating will definitely a reward to driver and bear in mind that this is their incentive. If you rate them 4 stars or below, they might lost the chance to get the weekly incentive just because of you. So please do give your rating deliberately.

REMARK:

  • Giving tips to driver is not compulsory, but it will definitely a reward to driver for their hard work.
  • During peak hour (heavy jam), it is always hard to get a driver, here is the trick on how to get a driver easily. Put the notes in the “notes to driver”, such as “I would like to pay extra RM10 for the trip”. This will definitely increase the chance for you the get the driver. Hope this help !๐Ÿ™‚
